Earth, Wind and Fire: What the Elements Teach Us

Have you ever stopped to consider how miraculous the Earth and her systems and elements are? I marvel at how Gaia self-manages herself. I appreciate all her elements, like earth, fire, wind, and water.
I notice how fire burns away all the things that the Earth doesn’t need anymore. It clears the way for new life, like when a forest burns from a lightning strike and baby trees come from the burnt seeds and thrive in the decomposed earth and ashes. The fire reminds us that despite the apparent destruction there is beauty and new life in it.

We can write down, on a piece of paper, what no longer serves us and put it in a fire, even a tiny one in an ashtray, and let it burn. The burning helps us be free of it.
I observe how water is essential for all life. All forms of life require water to survive. The Earth herself requires water to balance her systems. Hurricanes cool the oceans and distribute rainfall.
To swim and play in the ocean removes all our stress and anxiety and leaves us with a feeling of peace, harmony, and joy.

Glaciers hold most of the Earth’s fresh water. Salt water is essential for ocean life, but life on land requires fresh water for drinking and bathing. Water also awakens our intuition, emotions, and creativity according to Mystery School and Wiccan teachings.
Air gives us the oxygen we need to exist and we, in turn, breathe out the carbon dioxide the plant world needs to survive.

Wind comes in many forms and is one of Earth’s most powerful tools that she uses to stay in balance. Wind distributes heat energy over the entire planet. Wind circulates hot air from the equator to the poles and returns the cooler air to the tropics. Wind blows dust from the Sahara Desert to nourish and fertilize the Amazon rainforest.
Mountains, rocks, and soil soak up carbon in the air. There is no part of Earth that doesn’t play an important role in keeping the Earth in balance and habitable.
The Earth itself is home to all of us — animals, insects, fish, plants, birds, bacteria, fungi, and other tiny elements we can’t even see! She is our original Mother. The Earth represents our grounding and stability.
Too often we take the Earth’s wisdom for granted and don’t even notice it! I love how the entire Earth has life. Everything is alive, even the things we don’t think are alive, like rocks, a mountain, or a seashell.
According to Quantum Physics everything is alive because all things are made up of atoms and even smaller particles that respond to each other and outside forces. To me this proves that the Earth herself has consciousness, and her elements have consciousness as well.
We need to think twice about littering, polluting, killing insects, and releasing fossil fuels into the air. If we continue destructive behavior we will perish, even as the Earth survives, like she has done for millions of years.
When people start seeing the Earth as a beautiful, living Being who has consciousness, who deserves love, respect, and compassion, then more people will want to preserve her health.
We can start today by planting more native trees in our yards and neighborhoods. Just by doing this simple step we will be showing Gaia that we care about her, and she will thank us for it.
To celebrate Earth Day April 22, what will you do to honor and protect Gaia?
